The chequerboard pattern was made from 81 separately cut two centimetre square pieces of translucent red, and green, and opaque orange glass, fitted together with four strips of variegated autumn coloured glass around the edge with four burgundy corner pieces, topped with a sheet of clear glass; and fired in the kiln for 24 hours to fuse the glass together.
The patterned glass was fired again for 24 hours on a mold to shape it.
